- 8. The 32 participating teams were to be drawn into the 8 groups of the group stage.
- 9. The ranking of teams in each group will be based on: 1) Points in all group matches 2) Goal difference in all group matches

- 11. 6) Goals scored in matches between tied teams 7) Drawing of lots
- 12. In the knockout stage there will be 4 rounds each eliminating the losers (the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final).
- 13. A draw in the knockout stages will be followed by two 15 minute periods of extra time to determine a winner.
- 14. If the teams are still tied, a penalty shootout will be held.

- 18. For the 1st time at a World Cup Finals, the matches will use goal-line technology. GoalControl GmbH will provide GLT technology.
- 19. All world champion since the 1st World Cup in 1930 (Argentina, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Uruguay, Brazil) have qualified.
- 20. Before the tournament, each of the 32 entrants will receive US$1.5 million for preparation costs.
- 21. Once at the tournament, the prize money will be distributed : US$8 million – To each team eliminated at the group stage (16 teams),
- 22. US$9 m – To each team eliminated in the round of 16 (8 teams), US$14 m – To each team eliminated in the quarter-finals (4 teams)
- 23. US$20 million – Fourth placed team, US$22 million – Third placed team, US$25 million – Runner up and US$35 million – Winner.
- 24. Forecasts on the eve of the tournament est. the cost to the Brazilian gov will be $14 bill, making it the most expensive WC to date.
- 25. FIFA is expected to spend $2 billion on staging the finals, with its greatest single expense being the $576 million prize money pot.
